The concept of trompe-l'oeil ("fool the eye") painting is almost as old as the idea of painting itself. Paint mimics the appearance of paper, tape, shadows, wood, stone, etc.
This approach to visual perception and representation leads to the possibilities of juxtapositions, layerings, and self referencing work, perhaps even meta painting.
