Los Angeles Figure Studies

I began these pieces at the beginning of 2023 as an outgrowth of the larger series of Los Angeles paintings. People had become more and more of a feature in what are essentially landscapes, so a singular emphasis seemed to be a good direction to explore. Figures in these urban settings provide an emotional connection and an even greater quality of ephemerality than the features of these transitory places.

These are small preparatory studies using paint and paper. They have become somewhat more refined, but the focus is still on a tension between the materiality of the paint and the immediacy of people in motion, resting, sitting, and standing, as individuals, pairs, or small groups. At some point the series will progress to life size versions of what currently exists at a more intimate scale.
