Los Angeles Figure Studies

I began these pieces at the beginning of 2023 as an outgrowth of the larger series of Los Angeles paintings. People had become more noticeable in what are essentially landscapes, so a singular emphasis seemed to be a good direction to explore. Figures in these urban settings provide an emotional connection and an even greater quality of ephemerality than the features of these transitory places.

These are small preparatory studies using paint and paper. They have become somewhat more refined, but the focus is still on a tension between the materiality of the paint and the immediacy of people in motion, resting, sitting, and standing, as individuals, pairs, or small groups.

As of mid 2026 the series has started to progress from the more intimate and uniform scale to something approaching life size, which has been the intention from the start.
